How to use AeroStar to run CdA & Crr analyses

AeroStar

The AeroStar web-app analyzes a Notio JSON file. AeroStar lets you inspect the sensor data, calculated CdA, and validate the answer by comparing Measured with Virtual values.

The app has 8 primary pages: Info, User, Load, Map, Sensors, CdA, Validation, & Report. You start at the User page and work your way down.

Info

Info describes why the app was created, this short how-to, a FAQ, further reading if you are interested in bike aerodynamics, ... and more.

User

User lets you register, login and manage your subscription. Some AeroStar features are free, others are subscription-only. Computing the AeroStar CdA or Crr for your rides requires a subscription.

Load

Load lets you load a demo file or load your own Notio ride. Loading demo and Notio files is free.

The Options menu on the top-right lets you override the data in the loaded file to control elevation, airspeed etc.

Ride

Ride shows you info recorded in the Notio json file, including total weight, assumed Crr, ANT+ sensors etc.

Map

Map shows you a map of the loaded ride.

Sensors

Sensors graphs the 4 major sensors (power, elevation, ground speed, airspeed) of the ride. Every sensor can also be plotted individually on the 'CdA & More' page.

CdA & More

Cda & More lets you graph any data value, but defaults to showing the computed AeroStar CdA (as well as the Notio CdA).

AeroStar uses Sensor Fusion and Kalman Filters to model the bicycle ride and correct the model using sensor measurements. The AeroStar M2 model creates estimates for the CdA air resistance, and the AeroStar M4 model creates estimates for the air and rolling resistance.

The icons on the top-right let you zoom to extents, draw a rectangle to zoom-in, zoom-out 2x and zoom-in 2x. The colored eye icons on the top-left let you turn on/off the colored data lines.

Validation

Validation graphs the 4 major Virtual values (energy, power, velocity, elevation) and the corresponding measured values. The virtual values are computed without using the measured value. The CdA is accurate if and only if the graphs are similar.

You can learn more about Virtual Elevation that Robert Chung has popularized in Info>LearnMore.

Report

Report shows a list of report items (screenshots and text). You add a report item by pressing the 'Camera' button on other pages. Selecting a report item lets you add html-formatted text to the item. Press < to cancel or checkmark to accept. Swipe left to delete an item. Press the 'PDF' button to create a PDF report of the report items.
